St Clair Golf Club Weekly Wrap

10th July 2025

Men's Club Captain Report

Dear Members,

Last week we asked for the rain to go away. Didn’t quite get that but we managed to keep the course open albeit marginally. It could just have easily been closed.

Before getting into the results of the weekend I would like to mention pitch marks on greens. Yes, we go on about it but on Sunday we have so many pitch marks left unrepaired. This was from the previous day so that’s on us, the members. It really isn’t acceptable that many of our members don’t bother to fix these. We shouldn’t have to put up with this, so I ask you all to make an effort. Challenge your playing partners as we simply need to be better. I also recognise there are many members who go above and beyond fixing many of these so thank you to them.

We played the Platinum homes club captains mug on Saturday with Marty Banks recording the best nett with a nett 68. Well played and enjoy the spoils. Best gross of the day was Patrick Moore with 71.

We also played the second round of the lucifer cup which is best 2 of 3 nett scores. Marty is joined by Frankie Elisara with one round to go on nett 142.

This week we play an American stableford. The rules as follows: A player records 4 points for a birdie, 3 points for a par, 2 points for a bogey and 1 point for a double bogey. Then simply add this number up and add your handicap. EG: Total points 42, Handicap 10, Score = 52. Winner is the player with the most points. The following weekend we will be playing the winter Ambrose.

Pennants:
We still need players for Presidents. It’s played-on Sundays and handicap division are up to 12.0, 12.0 -17.0 and 17.0 and over. We need more players for our squad so even if you can’t play all the time you, we would still love to hear from you.

Two of our pennant teams made it through to the semifinals. Intermediate lost on a playoff hole to Island Park and Senior A narrowly won against the Otago B52 team which set up the final the following day. Unfortunately, they lost 4.5-1.5 to then Otago bombers. More details next week.

Women's Club Captain Report

Well done to those few that managed to complete their round on Saturday. This week (8th/12th July) we're playing an American Stableford* (rules below) and the following week (15th/19th July) is the Dodgshun Memorial stableford (round 4).

*A player receives 4 points for a birdie, 3 points for a par, 2 points for a bogey and 1 point for a double bogey. Points over the 18 holes are added together and then the players course handicap is added to this total. For example total points = 42, handicap = 10, final score is 52. The winner is the player with the most points. The computer will work out your total score if you don't want to do this yourself.

Here’s hoping for some better weather this week.

Cheers
Hannah West

Dunedin Futures - Dunedin Junior Golf (DF)

Dear SCGC Members,

Dunedin Futures is looking for a new Trustee(s) for the Southern Golf Foundation Trust.  The Trust oversees Dunedin Futures, formerly Dunedin Junior Golf.  The Trust is well-funded, has an excellent an established Co-ordinator well supported by the current Trustees and some parent and student help, and has grown in strength since it was brought out of hibernation 8 years ago. At 1 March 2025 we had 438 junior members and 80 adult guardian/parent linked members.

This is NOT an onerous task; meetings are quarterly and there is no expectation of attendance at any golf days or events, although any Trustee is welcome to attend as Trustee or naturally supporting their offspring.  Ideally a candidate does have offspring participating or contemplating participating in Dunedin Futures but this is not prescriptive as, by example, two current Trustees do not.

As said the Co-ordinator is well established and embedded in Dunedin Futures, as are several key golf personalities around Dunedin Golf. The Trust well established and only looking to 'tweak' its current strategy towards encouraging our juniors to be exposed to, and to play, golf in Dunedin.

Any interested parties should contact Andy Nailard
(e-mail preferred: andy@flagstaffalpacas.nz  or mobile: 0274-722270).
