.

Dear Members

.

Last Saturday we played the Platinum Homes Club Captains Mug. Congratulations to Carter Hepburn who won with a net 68 on cb from Fulton Henry.

It was also a good day for Jason Santos who not only had the best gross of the day with 74 (on CB from Ross Colquhoun) but also won the Alto Café longest put on the ninth and the Speights Ale House closest to the pin on the eighteenth.

Fulton Henry is the new leader in the JW Smeaton shootout and Jason Santos leads the Ron Johnston Memorial.

This week we play the first round of the 4BBB and a stableford for others. Remember to write the results of the 4BBB on the results sheet in the men’s locker room.

Course Convenor's Report

Hello fellow St Clair members,

I had some conversations last week about the course, one of which hit home, it was an email outlining that we need to start celebrating what has been achieved on the course instead of constantly berating what isn’t perfect. And a good call I say. So, I took some time to read through the last survey comments.

Possibly the top comment was on the poor condition of the tee boxes, and I’m sure you will all agree, there has been significant improvement in recent times. Some new tee blocks, better irrigation, and repairs to others, overall, fantastic effort.

There were many comments about the practice area, most notably was drivers being hit towards 17th fairway. The comments were from both side, people feeling unsafe on 17 and others frustrated they couldn’t practice with driver. Again, asked and answered, the alarm was installed to alert people on the range that there are golfers on 17, this seems to be working fine. But please, the emphasis still needs to be on those hitting towards people, just be aware.

The condition of the bunkers was also called into question, I have noticed a massive improvement here, being mindful that we can’t possible have light fluffy white sand due to wind, we would almost have to replace it weekly. So, acknowledgment where it is due, well-done team.

Another key notation was the difference between the practice green and the course greens. Remembering that only 16 of our greens were re-built to more modern sand based, 2 greens remain soil based plus the practice green. Through consistent maintenance and regular sanding, the 2 on-course greens are more like the other 16 and the practice green is very close too.

Personally, I’m still working through the day to day of this role, making sure tat the membership is informed but not overstepping boundaries, I guess you could say that I have no allegiance to anyone, but my loyalties are will all. We do have a lot to do, but we have also achieved so much. Thanks to the member that pointed out that should celebrate what has been achieved. Also, thanks to the members that are keen just to have a chat about the course.

Kind regards,

Mark Rowley

What relief is available from areas affected by tree felling?

With the exception of penalty areas, those areas of the course affected by tyre marks or debris due to tree removal are deemed “Ground Under Repair” (GUR), and a free drop may be taken (within 1 club-length of the nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole).
If the ball is lost in GUR, the point of relief is where it first crossed into the GUR.

The whole of the gully area between holes 11 and 12 has now been marked with blue pegs to indicate that it is GUR.

Note that branches are also loose impediments so can be removed from anywhere on the course including penalty areas. However, if your ball moves in the process, it is a one stroke penalty (except on the teeing area or putting green) and the ball must be replaced.
