St Clair Golf Club Weekly Wrap

5th March 2026

Men's Club Captain Report

Dear Members

Last week we played best 3/4 stablefords, see results below.

We also sent a team of 20 men and women to take on Waimate at Waimate for the Brick Trophy. This was played as individual matchplay. It’s fair to say St Clair came second, going down 16.5 to 3.5. Only Greg Flannery managed a win for the team with a few others adding the halves. Waimate club captain, Todd Bailey, takes the trophy (R).

NZ Ambrose
The team of Will Hepburn, Drew McMillan, Hayden Calder and Richard Redmond made it to the final of the inaugural NZ Ambrose.

They won flights, accommodation and golf at Pukekohe golf club to compete in the final where they finished 5th. Well done guys and I am sure good times had by all.

This week we play the second round of the Platinum Homes Club Champs and the Platinum homes club captains’ mug & Ron Johnston memorial. Good luck to all those still going in the club champs.

Cross Country is back, register yourself or your team in the pro shop for Friday 20th March.

Pennants. WE NEED PLAYERS. The team sheets are on the notice board in the men’s changing rooms. Please enter your names on the sheets. It’s a great way to play all the other Dunedin course and represent your club.

Course Convenor's Report

St Clair Golf Course Greens Quality Audit and Greens Maintenance Recommendations December 2025

The audit on the greens was carried out on the 2nd December 2025 by David Howard (New Zealand Sports Turf Institute) The 3rd, 12th and 17th were assessed again so ongoing comparisons could be made with previous assessments. The course in the previous week had had a total of 23mm of rain. In 2024 the audit was carried out on the 12th December, after the course had had a total of 7mm of rain the previous week.

The overall greens quality rating for the 2025 Audit was 77.6/100 compared to 76.8/100 last year. The rating is within the club’s guidelines. It should be noted that the greens quality rating is a snapshot in time and does not take into account ‘sub-surface’ factors.

Organic matter results showed that levels on the greens have reduced in the surface (0-10mm) and the levels in the other depths have remained at similar levels. The greens were not cored last year and at this stage, if the organic matter levels remain within the guidelines and the fertiliser application and sand topdressing programme remains the same, the need for hollow Tyne coring is not necessary. However, if/when the yearly testing of the organic matter levels was to show an increase above the guidelines, then the need to core again should be undertaken.

The real benefit of the auditing process for the club is the repeatability of the assessments over time. This allows trends to show up and inputs to be fine-tuned as and when required to achieve the desired outcomes.

If there is an obvious operational issue that effects normal club play, please let Chris know as soon as possible so that he can effect a change.

Please remember to give way to our greens staff on the course.

Members can contact me with feedback or questions regarding the course on my dedicated club email address at convenor@stclairgolf.co.nz

Play well

Volunteers needed for our trapping programme

As most Members will know, we have a trapping programme on our course.

Due to people leaving town we are in need of another 2 to 4 extra trappers. This is organised through a roster system and would require a duty every 4-6 weeks. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours each time and will require a bit of training for anybody wanting to join us in this very important and successful programme. We seem to be reasonably well on top of our pests as we now don't catch a lot but it would be a pity to let this slip.

If you are interested and would like to discuss your involvement please contact me.

Thank you
